Two barges intentionally grounded on Government Island Tuesday morning #katu2abc #liveonk2

Two barges ran aground near Government Island early Tuesday morning in a move the operating company says was intentional.

Shortly before 6 a.m. a KATU photojournalist captured footage of a large barge beached near the north side of Government Island, east of the Glenn Jackson Bridge.

Our photojournalist captured footage of crews arriving at the scene and pumping water out of one of the barges, which was listing heavily to the right.

Shaver Transportation later confirmed the ships were their barges, and that the grounding was intentional after they realized there was a problem with one of the vessels.

The company did not say what the problem was, but clarified that no one was hurt or in danger.
