Wakeboarding accident claims one life on the Columbia River #oregon #oregonnews #katu2abc

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a death on the Columbia River near Tri-Club Island Sunday morning.

Crews from multiple agencies were dispatched at 11:11 a.m. on the report of a water rescue.

Deputy John Plock tells KATU News that the circumstances of the original call changed, and they are now investigating an accidental death.

“The gentleman was in the water wakeboarding. The rope got wrapped around the propeller and he got pulled under the boat by the rope and propeller,” Deputy Plock said.

The sheriff’s office says the victim was a 72-year-old male.

“People had already gotten this gentleman out from under the boat and had him on the swim deck of the boat when the first fireboat arrived on scene. Medics declared him deceased here on the river,” Plock added.

This is the second death in the same area in the last eight days. Last Saturday, July 27, an adult male drowned near Lemon Island.

The Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause of death.
