Oregon Senate approves bill to boost awareness about cash payment law
2 min read
Lawmakers want to ensure that businesses and customers know that cash is still king in Oregon. The Oregon Senate passed a bill aimed at raising awareness among the public about the state’s requirement to accept cash.
Senate Bill 1176 would require the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) to conduct a comprehensive public education campaign, informing businesses and customers about the legal obligation to accept cash.
Senate Bill 1176 builds on the 2022 law (SB 1565), which established the requirement for most businesses to accept cash payments. Businesses like the Moda Center, online shops, and membership-only retailers are exempt from this law because of potential complications with accepting cash.
