Portland police warn of a possible dangerous street racing event this weekend

This weekend Portland police are expecting a street takeover called the West Coast Invitational, they say last year it brought a thousand people out.

To kind of give you an idea how last year went associated with this event, there was a homicide, two shootings, a fatal car crash, and disruption to many emergency services, including fire and EMS,” said Lt. Chadd Stensgaard with PPB.

Lt. Stensgaard says these events bring people with guns – and young inexperienced drivers with high-powered cars.

“The people that participate are doing it for social media likes,” said Stensgaard.

The risks these kinds of events bring are why PPB is teaming up with other metropolitan police departments – like Vancouver and Gresham.
