Former NOAA head Rick Spinrad talks potential Oregon impact if Trump cuts to agency approved
2 min read
A few weeks ago, internal Trump administration budget documents were leaked to a few national news outlets, like The New York Times and NPR, that laid out the administration’s plans to deeply cut funding for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and many of the programs within it.
NOAA plays a significant role in the lives of Americans and Oregonians, including providing weather forecasts through the National Weather Service as well as salmon recovery and the management of fisheries to provide safe and abundant seafood in the Pacific Northwest.
Rick Spinrad was the former administrator of NOAA during the Biden administration. He was also an Oregonian, living in Bend, and a former professor at Oregon State University, where in 1982 he earned a doctorate in Oceanography from the university.
During a Zoom interview with KATU News this week from his home in the Washington, D.C. area, he said he was “deeply, deeply concerned” about the consequences of the Trump administration’s proposed cuts to the agency he used to lead.
