Washington Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez holds town hall amid backlash over vote for Pres. Trump’s SAVE Act

Washington’s U.S. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Skamania, is holding a town hall in Vancouver on Thursday,
She was one of just four Democrats who voted in support of President Donald Trump’s Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act or the SAVE Act.
“I do not support noncitizens voting in American elections, and that’s common sense to folks in Southwest Washington," Perez said in a press release.
The controversial bill would require people to show proof of citizenship, like a government issued ID and birth certificate when registering to vote.
Opponents are outraged over Perez’s vote and are concerned it would hinder the ability to vote for many, like married women who have changed their name.
Supporters say the bill would safeguard America’s election system after, "The United States has not adequately enforced Federal election requirements that, for example, prohibit States from counting ballots received after Election Day or prohibit non-citizens from registering to vote," the White House said.
