Oregon woman says she could not eat for two days after SNAP benefits were wiped out

A woman says she was forced to not eat for two days after her SNAP benefits were seemingly stolen.

Ashley Stoner has been unemployed and is receiving federal SNAP benefits, but earlier in April, she went to a local grocery store where her card kept declining when she tried to make a purchase.

When she checked her account, her benefits were completely wiped out.

Adding to her frustration, a new federal rule says SNAP benefits stolen through electronic benefit theft after December 20, 2024, cannot be replaced.

KATU reached out to the Oregon Department of Human Services about Stoner’s claim, and we are waiting to hear back from the agency.

ODHS is urging people to protect their benefits and shared the following information:

– The ebtEdge website and mobile app are the only safe places to manage your benefits.
– People with EBT cards are encouraged to lock their cards when not in use.
– Block out-of-state and online purchases and monitor your account frequently.
– If your benefits are stolen, you should cancel your card immediately.
