Portland security guard goes viral for compassionate approach to street challenges

A private security guard in Portland has gone viral online for all the right reasons.

Damian Bunting is a familiar face to people who live on the streets. But now he’s getting attention from around the world.

Bunting calls himself the “atypical security guard.” If you work in Downtown Portland, you might recognize him. He’s 6-foot, 2-inches tall; weighs 275 pounds; and dresses like a “Call of Duty” character. He’s almost hard to miss.

Bunting is an armed security officer for Echelon Protective Services.

His job is to keep the peace for private companies. But Bunting says a lot of what he does is triage, helping people who are dealing with homelessness, mental health challenges, and addiction.
