Lawmakers push bill to prepare for major earthquake in North Portland

Lawmakers are considering a bill that would address the dangers North Portlanders could face if hit by a major earthquake. That’s where Rep. Travis Nelson, D-Portland, comes in.

Lawmakers say the existing bridges are not enough to withstand a major earthquake. On Monday, the Joint Committee on Transportation considered a bill that would design a bridge across Columbia Boulevard.

Lawmakers presented research showing that an area in North Portland is in danger of liquifying during an earthquake, meaning it becomes mud.

The concern is what happens to North Portlanders who could be trapped.
