Hood River Police: Man killed by suspects trying to steal property from his vehicle

Hood River Police have arrested two people in connection with the death of a man killed Friday afternoon.
According to police, they responded to the intersection of 5th and June Street around 3:46 p.m. and found a man lying in the roadway. He died at the scene despite efforts by paramedics.
Officers discovered the man was killed while trying to keep thieves from stealing property from his vehicle.
According to a press release, the man, identified as Stephen M. Hayes, 38, was struck by the suspect’s truck as they attempted to flee.
On Saturday, April 12, 2025, police arrested William Edward Hardy, 36, and Elizabeth June Bowman, 41. Both suspects are charged with 2nd degree manslaughter, first degree robbery and theft, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
