Portland assault survivor relieved as perpetrator is convicted 10 years later

A man was found guilty of rape, sodomy, and sexual abuse for an attack that took place in 2015 at a Rite Aid store in Portland.

The verdict was delivered on Friday, bringing relief to Maryann Stott, the survivor of the assault.

"Once I heard that ‘guilty’ [charge], I took a huge sigh of relief. Like, a lot of things came out…stress and all my anxiety just came out with it," Stott said.

Daniel Luis Cassinelli faces a minimum of eight years in prison, with sentencing set for July 11. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office noted that the case had gone cold in 2015 but was revived in 2021, thanks to a federal grant known as the "Sexual Assault Kit Initiative."
