Active shooter threat at Silverton High School was a ‘swatting’ hoax, police chief says

The active shooter threat made against Silverton High School on Friday was a hoax, authorities confirmed.
According to Silverton Police Chief Todd Engstrom, the threat was a “swatting” prank. Swatting is when a person calls emergency services about a fake incident in the hopes of bringing about a large emergency response.
Engstrom said dispatch got a call around 1:30 p.m. from a person claiming to be the shooter, who said that they were inside the school and that they had shot someone. No other details about the caller have been released other than it was a male voice on the line.
The school was immediately placed on lockdown and responding officers, including several officers from other agencies in Marion County, began a search of the premises.
“Everything went as scripted. I have to commend the high school for what they did. They did everything that they’ve trained to do over the years,” Engstrom said.
