Salem budget proposal threatens cuts to library and park services jobs

The City of Salem released a budget proposal Wednesday that would cut 51 full-time jobs and impact several city services.
The Salem Public Library would face the brunt of these cuts. The West Salem branch would close, and 20 full-time Library employees would lose their jobs.
Library hours would be cut to 20 hours per week. Currently, operations are 38 hours per week.
With the loss of employees, many library programs like early literacy and senior outreach would likely be scaled back. Library employees would turn much of their focus towards organizing and circulating books and other library materials.
"This was a very rough week for us," said Bridget Esqueda, interim director of the Salem Public Library. "We connect people to resources. We provide services that otherwise wouldn’t be able to be offered elsewhere. We’re all capable of doing that because of the wonderful and talented staff that we have. So, losing that would be such a detriment to the community."
