Man accused of killing mental health worker found guilty except for insanity

The man who stabbed and killed a mental health worker at a group home two years ago was found guilty except for insanity on Tuesday.
James Smith, 61, will be sent to the Oregon State Hospital for the killing of 26-year-old Haley Rogers in July 2023 at McCarthy Place in Gresham.
The psychiatric security review board will decide when and if he should be released but Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Sean Hughey says he will more than likely spend the rest of his life there.
The mother of the victim, Meshell Rogers, used Tuesday’s hearing to point to problems with Oregon’s mental health system. She said Smith’s commitment to the state hospital rather than prison is what her daughter would have wanted.
"Haley was the most loving person that I have ever met, and if she would have survived the brutal attack, she would be advocating for Mr. Smith right now. I know she would be. She would want whatever is best for him. She would have gone out of her way that night to help him in any way that he needed."
