Portland budget deficit prompts debate over public safety and service reductions

The conversations continue when it comes to the City of Portland’s budget deficit. Right now, the city is facing a $93 million budget gap.

Last month, the city administrator announced his suggestions for slicing the budget ahead of Mayor Keith Wilson’s budget proposal in May. Previously, the city had claimed they were facing a $100 million budget deficit. Officials later revised the deficit to $93 million "as facts and details became clearer."

Eliminating some vacant and staffed positions within the City Budget Office and Business Office Operations Division is one option being considered. Officials also aim to let two “limited-term positions” in the Revenue Division expire.

Reducing community grants, reducing external materials and services, and reducing funds for “Small Donor Elections Programs” are just some of the reductions in a single service area that could help narrow the funding gap.
