Girl rescued after being swept out to sea in Seaside, Oregon; fire div. chief shares story of rescue

A young girl was rescued from the ocean near Seaside, Oregon, after being pulled into the water by strong currents.
Seaside Fire & Rescue responded to the incident at 6:17 p.m. on Saturday after witnesses reported the girl being swept away on the beach in front of the Turnaround.
In a situation where every minute counts, help was quick to arrive.
“A 12-year-old had been missing for, you know, a few minutes by the time we got there,” said Genesee Dennis, a spokesperson with Seaside Fire and Rescue.
Dennis said crews quickly launched into the 50-degree water with the swell at about eight feet at some points.
“Teams launched skis and then also water rescue swimmers and did a search, and ended up, the team on shore spotted someone standing about eight blocks north of where they originally went missing. And so, then they went over and discovered that that was the missing person and assisted them back to shore,” Dennis said.
Dennis said the girl told them that at first, she fought the current and then, once she got tired, she relaxed and focused on keeping her head above water.
“And then eventually, you know, kind of thought about giving up, and this is what she was telling Cruz and that she then saw the skis coming and then tried to stand up and found herself standing on a sandbar,” Dennis said.
