La Center School District appeals state findings on gender inclusivity policies

The La Center School District has filed a formal appeal against the state of Washington’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) over its investigation into how the district approaches gender identity in school.

Officials with OSPI said the district discriminated against students and families when it comes to their approach to gender inclusivity and rights of queer and transgender students. Specifically, officials said La Center is violating anti-discrimination policies centering around pronouns.

Washington state’s policy is to have students tell school staff their preferred pronouns. The La Center policy forbade staff from asking any student their gender pronouns. But, if a student has a request, they will honor it.
