One man’s housing journey hindered by budget cuts and shelter closure in Portland
2 min read
A Portland man who has lived in a Safe Rest Village for more than a year is still facing hurdles as he struggles to get into more permanent housing.
KATU News first talked with Naresh Mall in the summer of 2024. He reached out to KATU’s Angelica Thornton, saying he was slipping through the cracks of the system.
"I just want to have a place I can call my own, said Mall. "I want to progress, I guess you could say."
Mall travels an hour and a half each way, by bus, MAX train, and foot, to get to his full-time job as a night auditor at a hotel. He has a college degree, and a good resume, and says he’s been clean and sober for years, but he’s still homeless.
