Construction of new Burnside Bridge delayed due to uncertainty from Trump admin., county says

Multnomah County officials said Thursday they are delaying the start of construction on a new earthquake resilient Burnside Bridge for one year and they are extending the project’s design phase.
The county suggested in a news release the delay was because of “significant uncertainty” stemming from the Trump administration.
In an email to KATU News, Multnomah County Transportation Division Director Jon Henrichsen said the county is unsure whether federal grants will continue. If those grant programs stop, he said the project will be hard to pay for without the federal funds. Henrichsen also said the threat of tariffs could drive up the costs for construction materials.
"The project has to buy everything in America, but when imported materials get more expensive due to tariffs, the materials become more scarce — and as a result the materials produced in America become more expensive," he wrote.
He also cited changes and cuts to federal agencies and policies that reverse environmental regulations as factors contributing to the uncertainty.
