Multnomah County assessor hires outside help to fight increase in tax bill challenges

Multnomah County is hiring outside help to defend against property tax challenges as more and more non-residential property owners fight their bills.

Data KATU obtained from the county assessor shows more owners of industrial, commercial, and multifamily properties are challenging their tax bills – and apparently winning.

The county issued more than $20 million in combined refunds across 2022 and 2023 – with several appeals outstanding. The county refunded a total of roughly $6 million combined in 2018 and 2019.

County assessor Mike Vaughn told KATU appeals show an "engaged community" and that the challenge is not with the increased appeals but with the types of properties being appealed.
