New Oregon bill targets transparency with gas station price signs after years of local complaints

A new bill would require price signs at gas stations to be visible from the street.
This comes after years of complaints about a Woodburn Arco charging double the average cost of gas in the area. The department of justice tells KATU that it has received a total of 256 complaints about this gas station since 2017.
Where most stations display prices on placards and sometimes billboards, that station only has prices on the pump – which is required in Oregon.
Representative Lesly Munoz, who is sponsoring the bill, says she has been overcharged at that gas station before. Our crews visited the gas station in question on Friday and were given the option to pump their own gas. The price still was not advertised outside of the station, but it was not an above-average price.
Reviews on Better Business Bureau report the price a little over a month ago was $6.69 a gallon.
The owner’s lawyer says the station is changing gas providers and expects his prices to meet the average now. The owner claims BP Arco was the one over-charging him for gas, but would not agree to show us evidence of that.
He says the price change is not because of the newly-proposed bill.
