US car theft crime sees largest decline in 40 years, led by steep drop in PNW

Car thefts in the US were down 17% in 2024, marking the largest decline in 40 years.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) said about 851,000 cars were stolen nationwide in 2024. That is a significant drop from 2023, which recorded more than a million thefts.
The new data is an about-face to a four-year trend of rising numbers. And the Pacific Northwest is leading the country with the largest drop in vehicle theft crime.
