Scammers spoof Oregon Humane number, demand money for fake pet medical expenses
2 min read
The Oregon Humane Society is warning pet owners of a new scam. A spokesperson with OHS says they’ve gotten multiple reports of people posing as humane society employees, claiming they have their lost pet and it needs medical care. But in order to pay for the medical care, they need the money to pay for the surgery.
“We want to make sure that people know that here at the Oregon Humane Society if we have your lost pet, we would never call you and demand money for medical care,” Laura Klink, a spokesperson for OHS, said during an interview with KATU. “We don’t use Venmo here.”
Klink says the scam can be quite convincing, as the scammers have figured out how to “spoof” OHS’s real number. Klink says if you do get a phone call, to hang up, and call OHS back directly.
