Scientist sisters are using an unlikely tool for environmental conservation and research: a snout!

Heather and Hilary Rose Dawson from Eugene, OR, trained their golden retriever, Rye, to sniff out wild Oregon truffles for scientific study.

By rewarding him with his favorite toy for every find, Rye has quickly grown a wide scent library. He even learned how to differentiate between mushrooms and truffles.

"Rye does not find mushrooms, even the stinky mushrooms. He just passes over them, because they don’t have whatever truffle aroma is signaling to these, you know, above ground and below ground critters. You know, come eat me, I’m a truffle," said Heather, a doctoral student at the University of Oregon.
