EXTENDED INTERVIEW: Portland public safety leader on how funding for a program could save lives

A public safety leader in Portland said lives could be at stake if the city council doesn’t fund the city’s gun violence intervention plan – as it faces a $92-million budget shortfall in the next fiscal year to continue paying for everything it pays for today, plus a few new programs.
Portland’s gun violence prevention program – dubbed Ceasefire – faces an uncertain financial future because it’s funded with expiring federal money.
KATU spoke with Director of Community Safety Stephanie Howard about the program, and how it has played a big part in a roughly 20% drop in reported shootings last year compared to 2023.
