Mounted police chase suspect through Florida neighborhood after he struck police horse

A 22-year-old suspect is facing charges after allegedly striking a police horse named Mount Opus while on duty in Ybor City over the weekend. The suspect attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended.

Authorities said the individual now faces two charges: one felony count of offenses against police animals for touching or striking, and one misdemeanor count of resisting an officer without violence.

Officials reminded the public that intentionally striking police animals is a crime with serious consequences.

They also advised that while K-9s and horses enjoy engaging with the community, individuals should always seek permission from the handler before approaching.
