OMSI in Portland pauses around 20 of its federally-funded projects

Lawmakers are racing to avoid a possible government shutdown ahead of a Friday deadline. House Republicans say they have a plan to fund the government through September 2025, but Democratic leaders are not on board, with some calling cuts to domestic spending programs "reckless."

KATU is tracking potential impacts at the local level. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, better known as OMSI, says they have paused around 20 federally-funded projects as of Mar. 1. The projects are at varying stages of completion. And while it’s not clear what triggered the initial pause, OMSI says they will reassess this Friday, Mar. 14, when Congress decides on a resolution or budget to fund the federal government.

In a statement provided to KATU News, OMSI president Erin Graham said, in part, "The paused projects are important to both OMSI and our partners with whom we’re working, and we truly hope our previously awarded funding is honored. We are planning multiple scenarios and continuing to advance the initiatives funded by private philanthropy and our operations."

KATU reached out to OMSI to find out which projects were paused. While they didn’t give us a list, they did confirm that one of the paused projects was "Wildfire and Human Health Exhibit." It’s funded by the "Science Education Partnership Award" to help understand the research and impacts of wildfires.
