La Center schools and Washington State clash over parental rights in gender identity issues
2 min read
A two-year investigation has wrapped up surrounding the La Center School District.
Washington state education officials have determined the district discriminates against students and families when it comes to their approach to gender inclusivity and rights of queer and transgender students. Now, the district is pushing back.
The district says it’s the parent’s right to know if their child wants to use a different name or pronoun. The state has now ordered the district to make changes within the next 45 days to comply with state policy.
La Center is a small rural community. There are roughly 1,750 students in the entire school district. That’s kindergarten through 12th grade. And right now there’s a bit of a showdown between the Washington Department of Education, known as OSPI, and the small district.
