Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the United States tariffs are a ‘very dumb thing to do’

President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada and Mexico went into effect on Tuesday, along with increased duties on goods from China, prompting swift retaliation.

Imports from Mexico and Canada will carry a 25% tariff while goods from China will see a 10% increase on existing tariffs, according to the White House. Canadian energy products are also subject to 10% import duties.

"While President Trump gave both Canada and Mexico ample opportunity to curb the dangerous cartel activity and influx of lethal drugs flowing into our country, they have failed to adequately address the situation," a release stated.

In response, China’s government said it would place an additional 10% to 15% tariffs on imported goods from the U.S., such as chicken, wheat, soybeans and beef beginning on March 10. It also expanded the number of U.S. companies subject to export controls and other restrictions by about two dozen.

"Let me reiterate that intimidation does not scare us. Bullying does not work on us. Pressuring, coercion or threats are not the right way of dealing with China," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said during a briefing. "Anyone using maximum pressure on China is picking the wrong guy and miscalculating. If the U.S. truly wants to solve the fentanyl issue, then the right thing to do is to consult with China on the basis of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit to address each other’s concerns."
