Mixed feelings about how Portland Police Bureau spent 15K overtime hours on demonstrations

At Thursday’s meeting of the Labor and Workforce committee, at least one city councilor felt that the money spent on about 15,000 hours of overtime pay for police officers in the ’25 fiscal year could have been better spent elsewhere.
“Our entire annual crime prevention programs budget is less than what we spent in a couple of weeks on demonstration-related overtime," said Sameer Kanal, a District 2 councilor for the city of Portland. "I pointed out that because of the way protest movements evolved, there weren’t the types of protests that we had seen in the past."
The fiscal year begins in July and is not over yet. The data presented Thursday looked at the past three fiscal years, specifically the first 15 pay periods. However, the total number of overtime hours has roughly stayed the same over the past three fiscal years.
A driving force for the massive increase in overtime for staffing demonstrations was the fact that it was an election year.
