Black History Month: Spotlighting Sallye Brooks Mathis

Sallye Brooks Mathis was a civil rights activist in Jacksonville, and served on the city council for 15 years. During her service, which started in 1967, she initiated legislation for a Citizens’ Police Review Board as well as free public toilets and equal job opportunities in public agencies.
Mathis was also a teacher in the Duval County School System for over 25 years and had a school in the Ribault neighborhood named in her honor.
