Portland’s gun violence prevention program among those at risk amid budget shortfall

Life-saving programs could be at risk with Portland’s possible $100-million budget shortfall – including the city’s initiative to stop gun crimes before they happen.

The city blames its budget crisis on expiring federal COVID-19 funding, increases in labor costs, and property tax revenues that are not keeping up with forecasts.

Among the programs in jeopardy, city leaders need to find about $10 million to fund Ceasefire beyond this summer. The initiative pairs community and police — for focused intervention on people most likely to be involved in shootings.
