Oregon lawmakers consider bill banning leaded fuels at racetracks amid health concerns
2 min read
Lawmakers in Oregon are considering a bill that would ban the use of leaded fuels at racetracks in cities with populations exceeding 500,000.
This legislation would specifically impact Portland, the only city in the state meeting that population threshold.
Although leaded fuels have been banned for street use since the 1990s, some high-performance racecars still use them due to their ability to boost engine octane ratings, thereby enhancing efficiency and performance. Despite their widespread use at racetracks across the country, concerns have been raised about their environmental and health impacts.
Rep. Travis Nelson, the sponsor of the bill, said this has long been an issue for his constituents in North Portland, specifically for those who live near the Portland International Raceway.
