Former Oregon liquor official sues state over privacy breach in rare whiskey scandal

A former official at the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission (OLCC) has filed a lawsuit against OLCC alleging a violation of his privacy in connection with a scandal involving rare liquor.
Chris Mayton, the former Distilled Spirits Director, claims the agency improperly disclosed private information, leading to his dismissal.
The controversy erupted when several OLCC officials were found to have used their positions to secure rare bottles of whiskey for personal use, diverting them from public availability.
The state allows individuals to buy rare and limited additions of whiskey through its lottery system called the Chance to Purchase program.
KATU obtained records of the internal investigation in 2023, with audio recordings of interviews through a public records request. The reports revealed that high-level OLCC officials, including Mayton, reserved ultra-rare whiskey for themselves.
