Multnomah County expands emergency shelters as deadly cold snap continues

A camping mat on a crowded, hard floor may not seem like much to some but for people living outside, it’s a lifeline.
"This warmer shelter actually probably saved most of my fingers because it got pretty cold out here," said Jimmy Carter, who spent the night at a warming shelter in the Hollywood neighborhood.
With temperatures dropping below 25 degrees at night, Multnomah County’s dangerous weather thresholds have been met for the third day in a row. The county has been in an extended state of emergency, allowing emergency shelters to stay open and expand to meet demand.
