Historic Portland LGBTQ+ drag venue Darcelle’s at risk of closing after 57 years

1 min read

The Darcelle XV Showplace, a cornerstone of Portland LGBTQ+ culture and history, is at risk of closing its doors permanently after 57 years.

“People are still hesitant to come out to Old Town, especially at nighttime,” said Kevin Cook.

Cook, also known by his drag persona, Poison Waters, has been performing at Darcelle XV Showplace for 34 years, and he knew the club’s owner, Walter Cole, well.

Cole, better known as Darcelle, opened the club in 1967, and it quickly became a pioneer in the LGBT movement in the 1970s and 80s.
