A giant in Oregon politics, Peter Courtney, honored in celebration of life in the capitol city

The Oregon Legislature celebrated the life of Peter Courtney on Wednesday.

Courtney was the longest-serving legislator and Senate president in Oregon history. He died from complications of cancer in July at the age of 81.

The memorial was held at the Oregon State Capitol in the Senate chamber.

"The good news Peter is that gathered in this room and across our state are countless souls who are very grateful for the work you did, the example you set, the difference you made and the life you led. Your name, your work and your legacy will truly not be forgotten. Rest in Peace," former Gov. Kate Brown said.

Courtney was a giant in Oregon politics and was known for his work to improve mental health care in the state after he discovered, at the Oregon State Hospital, unclaimed cremated remains of nearly 3,500 Oregonians who had died there. He also was a force for animal rights.

A ceremony to rename the hospital after him was held at the site on the same day he died, July 16.

"Like the individuals who died at the Oregon State Hospital for whom he fought for their dignity and respectful resting place, he fought for a better mental health treatment system, he fought for the humane treatment of animals. Peter fought for everyday Oregonians in his work," Gov. Tina Kotek said on Wednesday.

Through a video appearance, his son, Sean, shared how his father put others before himself.

“He loved to learn a person’s story. He would also move heaven and earth to help someone in need, and I want to believe that everyone is gathered here today because Peter Courtney has touched their lives in some way and has likely helped them at a time when they needed it most,” he said.
