Some Portland area faith communities vow to protect undocumented immigrants
2 min read
Hundreds from different faith communities gathered in Portland to protect undocumented immigrants in our region as federal deportations ramp up under the Trump administration.
“I think it’s a great example of unity that people are here to show support for migrant community, and that gives us a great example how these countries should be,” Fransisco Aguirre, Executive Director of Viva Inclusive Migrant Network, told KATU.
Dozens of faith leaders from different religious backgrounds gathered in solidarity at Augustana Lutheran Church, Sunday, where it has become a sanctuary for migrants like Aguirre.
“We’re coming together around that because we believe that we can stop unjust deportations in this state,” Frank So with Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon said.
“I’m not afraid to [say] that I’m undocumented, and I’m asking President Trump to be kind to our community, to remember that we are part of the engine of the economy of this country, “ Aguirre added.
The Trump Administration has began to ramp up immigration enforcement.
ICE reported a sweeping crackdown on undocumented immigrants across the country.
The agency said on “X” that agents made 956 arrests on Sunday alone.
The news is bringing fear among migrant families across the Pacific Northwest.
“Our community is afraid of going out. We get a lot of calls, false raids all over, and our people are scared to go and do their daily routines. Like, taking their kids to their schools,” Aguirre said.
