Salem police shoot and kill man they say was wanted and armed with a gun

Salem police officers shot and killed a man Wednesday morning after chasing a man they said was armed with a handgun and wanted by police.

Police said at about 11:30 a.m. two officers chased the man as he ran into an apartment complex near River Road North and Stark Street and then toward one of the units.

The officers confronted the man and then at some point they opened firing, killing him.

Police said they tried to save the man’s life after they shot him, but he died at the scene.

No officers were injured.

Police have not released the name of the man or the officers involved in the shooting.

River Road N. is closed in both direction between Liberty St. and Plymouth St. due to this incident. Residents have been advised to avoid the area.
