Multnomah County lays out operation cost, timeline for sobering center
2 min read
Multnomah County commissioners heard from staff about progress on plans to open a permanent 24/7 sobering center at a warehouse in Southeast Portland. The center would allow police and community service providers to drop people off who need stabilization and detox from drugs and/or alcohol.
After initiating a purchase agreement on Jan. 3 on the approximately 2,400-square-foot warehouse on 1901 S.E. Grande Ave., county officials announced the location Jan 9.
County staff told commissioners they are currently in the "due diligence" period of the purchase agreement, where the building will be inspected and building costs for the project will be evaluated. County staff projected the purchase to finalize in April. In June, the county will put out a request for proposals and will commence the bidding process and locate a provider to run the sobering center.
