‘We failed’: Secret Service director speaks before lawmakers

Members of Congress took turns grilling U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on July 22, expressing frustration as she declined to answer detailed questions about the agency’s failure to prevent the July 13 assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump. She would not say how many agents were assigned to former president Donald Trump that day but said the number was “sufficient.” Nor would she say whether the Secret Service deployed a drone to surveil the area or how the gunman gained access to an unsecured roof and fired an AR-style rifle without being stopped by the Secret Service or local police.
