Pete Hegseth takes questions during his confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill

President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to be defense secretary was grilled by senators in a tense hearing filled with combative exchanges as Peter Hegseth defended himself against questions about troubles in his past and his qualifications to lead the Pentagon with 3 million employees and an $850 billion budget.

Hegseth’s hearing with the Senate Armed Services Committee kicks off a week of marathon to fill out Trump’s Cabinet before he takes office on Monday. Republicans are hoping to confirm as many nominees as possible when Trump takes office to give him a head start on implementing his agenda upon Inauguration Day.

Hegseth appears to be facing the most difficult path to confirmation. He can only afford to lose three Republican votes and still be confirmed, and several GOP senators have not indicated whether they intend to support him over the sexual assault allegations that he has denied and past comments about the military and women in combat roles.
