St. Helens choir teacher’s pattern of sexual assault should keep him in jail

Columbia County prosecutors have filed a memorandum urging a judge to keep St. Helens choir teacher Eric Stearns (46) in jail, citing serious concerns about public safety.

The memorandum, filed Wednesday, highlights allegations of sexual assault against two adults in 2021 and 2022.

Prosecutors allege that in one incident, an adult woman lost consciousness after Stearns gave her a drink and was subsequently assaulted. In another case, a woman reported feeling trapped and fearing for her life inside Stearns’ home.
