Oregon sends over 300 firefighters to aid California wildfire battle

The Oregon State Fire Marshal is deploying 15 strike teams to assist California in combating wildfires threatening communities near Los Angeles. The mobilization, which includes 240 firefighters and 60 engines, follows a request for assistance received late Tuesday evening.

The strike teams, drawn from locations and counties including Clackamas, Clatsop, Central Oregon, Lane, Lincoln, Linn/Polk, Marion, Multnomah, Rogue Valley, Washington, and Yamhill, are set to mobilize this morning. The Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office will continue to monitor the situation and respond to further requests as needed.

According to CAL FIRE, firefighters are encountering extreme fire behavior, with short and long-range spotting. Winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour are expected to persist through Thursday, exacerbating the dangerous conditions. Firefighters and air resources are actively working to protect communities and infrastructure while striving to contain the fires.

"Oregon and California have a strong partnership supporting each other. We both understand that fire does not recognize map lines, and we are ready to help each other whenever there is a need," said Oregon State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple. "During our historic 2024 wildfire season, California sent us help, and in their time of need, we are working as fast as possible to lend them support during this emergency."
