Oregon climate report predicts 5-degree warming by 2074, increased drought and less snow

A new report on how climate change is impacting the state of Oregon was released today. The report is released every 2 years and it focuses on shifts in temperature and weather patterns over the Pacific Northwest.

The report found that Oregon’s average annual temperature increased by 2.2 degrees over the last century.

It also indicates the state could become 5 degrees warmer by 2074.

This report found that besides warming, Oregon is prone to more drought and less snow due to a changing climate.

KATU News spoke with an associate professor from Portland State University who helped create this report.

“Some recent research that I’ve been involved with, led by scientists at OSU, looked into freezing rain with climate change, such as ice storms. The finding there is that in most parts of western Oregon, warming will reduce the amount of freezing rain and reduce ice storms,” said Paul Loikith, with Portland State University.

Loikith adds that though we have seen ice storms in the past few years, the research suggests that warming would make those events less likely over time.

Other data in the study suggests that one significant wildfire smoke event could cost the state at least $1 billion. The number of short-term health impacts of wildfire smoke is likely to increase considerably over the next 25 years, especially among older adults.
