Students return to Markham Elementary after year-long closure due to 2024 ice storm damage

Students are finally back in the classroom at Markham Elementary School in Southwest Portland. The grand re-opening comes after a year of repairs after 2024’s ice storm caused significant damage that forced the school to shut down, and the students to relocate.

“A year ago the school was practically underwater with the floods and the roof damage. There are parts of the roof that were replaced. Some internal things that you are not able to see with your eyes,” Dr. Kimberlee Armstrong, Portland Public Schools Superintendent, said of the big day.

Both Markham Elementary and Gray Middle School suffered severe damage during the storm, rendering the buildings unsafe for students and causing frustration among parents due to delayed timelines.

Officials told KATU in March 2024 they found hazardous materials in the building.
