Why Trump is back four years after Jan. 6

1 min read

On Monday, Congress will count the electoral votes to certify Donald Trump’s reelection to the White House. But four years ago, on Jan. 6, 2021, the country witnessed a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol that aimed to disrupt the certification of Biden’s presidency.

"If you woke up on Jan. 7 of 2021 with the glass still shattered on the floor of the Capitol and the smoke rising and the troops are surrounding the building, and you had said that Donald Trump will be president in four years, nobody would have believed that," Peter Baker of The New York Times told Washington Week moderator Jeffrey Goldberg.

After the 2021 insurrection, Baker noted that key members of the Republican Party decided to continue supporting Trump, and that most importantly, Trump voters "did not find what he did on Jan. 6 to be disqualifying" and still wanted him to be reelected president.

"That held power over the elected officials who didn’t," Baker said.
