Big blaze breaks out on Ross Island in the Willamette River south of downtown Portland

On Saturday afternoon, Portland Fire responded to a large wildfire burning on Ross Island in the Willamette River.
The thick black smoke plume could be seen for miles around the Portland area.
Crews were dispatched just before 4:45 p.m.
Officials said that old equipment and tractor tires were burning on the island.
Ross Island Sand and Gravel conducted mining operations on the island in the past.
In a post on X, (formerly Twitter), Portland Fire said Fire Boat 21 was shuttling firefighters to the island to attack the fire.
