New report analyzing crime data during DA Mike Schmidt’s term

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office released an end-of-term report Friday on former District Attorney Mike Schmidt’s time in office, as new DA Nathan Vasquez took the reins.

KATU News dug into the report to examine how Schmidt’s office has handled crime over the last four years.

One highlight of the report is that Schmidt reached a seven-year high in issuance, meaning that his office prosecuted more crimes per capita. The report also shows that the rate of homicides decreased by 14% between 2022 and 2023.

The report states, "While both property and personal crimes have generally decreased — with certain categories, like stolen vehicles, reaching their lowest levels in years — Portlanders’ negative perceptions of crime, particularly in the downtown area, have been slow to improve.”

In September 2023, Schmidt started the homicide unit, which has six district attorneys solely dedicated to prosecuting homicides. A data analyst for the district attorney’s office explained in more detail how crime trends changed.

"Certain crimes trended back down after a rise during the pandemic. Homicides are trending down. Violent crimes are turning back down. So kind of seeing, not necessarily, I can’t characterize it like a return to normal. But kind of a return to a little bit lower levels than we were seeing during 2020, 2021, 2022,” said Brianna Brown, a research and evaluation analyst for the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.
