YVYV: Representative-elect Janelle Bynum shares her thoughts on joining the 119th Congress

As the new year approaches, significant changes are on the horizon for Oregon’s congressional delegation. On Friday, members of the 119th Congress will be sworn in, marking the beginning of a new legislative session.
In November, Oregonians elected two new Democrats to the state’s congressional delegation. Maxine Dexter will represent the Third Congressional District, replacing longtime Congressman Earl Blumenauer. Dexter, a doctor and former state lawmaker, brings a wealth of experience to her new role.
Janelle Bynum, an engineer and former state lawmaker, will represent the Fifth District. Bynum made history by flipping the seat for Democrats and becoming Oregon’s first Black member of Congress.
Re-elected to their seats are Suzanne Bonamici in District 1, Cliff Bentz in District 2, Val Hoyle in District 4, and Andrea Salinas in District 6. All five women are Democrats, with Cliff Bentz standing as Oregon’s only Republican in Congress.
